BabyLex: A Comprehensive Baby Language Development Tool
BabyLex by Universitetet i Oslo offers a rich and interactive platform that facilitates language learning and cognitive development in infants, catering to both caregivers and educators.
We are parents and understand the importance of tracking your child's development. As researchers in child psychology, we have created an application designed to assess your toddler's vocabulary size.
The BabyLex app enables you to monitor your child's progress by taking the test whenever you wish to observe how their vocabulary expands. The assessment currently covers monolingual toddlers in English from 16 to 30 months old, in German from 18 to 30 months old, and in Norwegian from 18 to 36 months old.
Upon completion of the test, you will receive results indicating the estimated number of words your child likely uses based on an extended vocabulary questionnaire. Additionally, you will be provided with a percentile score comparing your child's performance with others of the same age and gender.
We trust that this application will be a valuable tool for tracking your child's development, just as it has been for us!
The research conducted on the BabyLex app introduces an innovative method that allows for quick and reliable assessment of a child's vocabulary within a 2-minute timeframe, a significant improvement compared to traditional tests that may take up to 45 minutes. Further information on the research methodology, developed in collaboration with the universities of Oslo and Göttingen, can be found on www.babylex.eu.
Please note that this estimate may fluctuate if you retake the test shortly after a previous attempt. This variation is within the margin of error and does not signify a regression in your child's vocabulary. It is simply a factor of the estimate's range of accuracy. Feel free to retest your child, and rest assured that this fluctuation is normal.
If your child does not recognize many words on the list, do not be alarmed. The word selection is random and not tailored to specific age groups. Whether your child knows all or none of the words presented depends on their age and the randomness of word selection by the app. Despite this variability, we can still provide a dependable estimate of your child's vocabulary.
It is essential to understand that BabyLex offers an estimate and not a clinical evaluation of your child's language development. We are researchers who are also parents aiming to provide insights into child development through our work. For a clinical evaluation, please consult your pediatrician for recommendations on professionals who can offer such services.
